A native of Montgomery, Professor O focused on music production

Omni Crenshaw, the man known as Professor O, is from Montgomery and has skills as a singer / songwriter. But that’s where his heart is today.

“I kind of want to play in the background now,” Crenshaw said.

As the owner of GumptownBeatz studio, Crenshaw said he was focusing on producing music for other artists.

“I was originally in bands and singing groups,” Crenshaw said. “The constant problem I was having was finding people to produce my music, and also having to pay people so much back in the day to do it. I decided that I would just learn to do it myself. . ”

It was a wise choice, and led to producing other people’s work. Starting in 2021, Crenshaw said things started to explode with GumptownBeatz, especially as he went from rap and hip hop to producing soul and southern blues.

“I’ve worked with a lot of southern soul artists who are on the radio right now,” Crenshaw said.

So what’s the real benefit of having an experienced producer to do your music? Part of it comes down to owning your music.

“I tell these young people all the time, often you don’t know the origins of these internet rhythms,” Crenshaw said. “If they’re working with me, then they know there are only two parties involved. They know exactly what they’re getting.”

He has built excellent relationships, including as Chief Producer at Savageworld Entertainment and working with Ron Shuford at Rutkus Management. Through them, he produces artists like Lou Battle, Elle Jai and Herm C TheRealest.

While he loves the production, Crenshaw said he still has his singing / songwriting skills and is considering putting something in place.

“Not necessarily a major project, but maybe make an EP or a single,” he said.
