This week, our featured artist is one of the greatest alternative rock bands to come out of the ’90s – not Seattle. Smashing Pumpkins was formed in 1988 by frontman Billy Corgan, bassist D’arcy Wretzky, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, although the lineup changed several times during the band’s existence.
The Smashing Pumpkins were one of many bands to rise under the reign of Seattle grunge. While they’re actually from Chicago and don’t necessarily share many visual or sonic components with their grunge contemporaries, they certainly benefited from the sudden media and radio emphasis on alternative rock. Their release in 1993 siamese dream was their first commercially successful album, and its follow-up, 1995 Melan Collie and the Infinite Sadness, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Corgan and Co. are still making albums and touring more than three decades later. Their latest album, 2020 Cyr, is a double album of 20 titles which lasts more than 70 minutes. Although their touring plans have been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to the day when we see Smashing Pumpkins return to the stage.
