Drill music is one of the hottest subgenres in the rap industry and is a global phenomenon. But veteran hip-hop producer Pete Rock recently called the drill music “doo-doo” and said it disturbs the soul.
On Friday, May 27, Pete Rock hopped on his Instagram account and shared a video post that has since been deleted featuring New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressing the violent nature of drill music and his intention to ban some of the music videos of the genre on social media. In the post’s caption, the esteemed DJ and producer wrote about his disdain for the genre.
“Drill the rap! This is trash hop not hip hop, we told you shit like that,” Rock wrote. “IDC call me whatever you want but this kind of hip-hop is doo doo and it disturbs the soul, I already told you that man lol smh. No one talks about that trash lol.”
Pete Rock goes on to write that drill rap was created solely for corporate greed and is destroying hip-hop culture.
“Drill rap not even for the birds or the streets, it’s the result of greed, talentless people and the destruction of culture,” he wrote in his since-deleted post. “You never see the play when it’s happening and everyone’s complaining but not talking or saying a word. Now this! That’s how we [are] go out? [It’s] on social networks but who really promotes it? Talk it over. hush.”
Pete Rock’s criticism of drill music might raise eyebrows among some rap fans, but the genre has been struggling growing up lately.
Last April, Bronx (NY) District Attorney Darcel D. Clark and New York City Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell released a four-page, 82-count indictment charges linked to 32 crimes, aided by music and videos, which surfaced from the city. kind of drill music, involving 20 people. Some of these charges include conspiracy, murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, assault, attempted assault, and robbery. Additionally, 18 guns were also recovered.
Before that, in February, rappers Fivio Foreign, Maino, B-Lovee and others had a meeting with Mayor Eric Adams to discuss the violent content of drill music and seek an immediate solution to reduce the violence that comes from of the kind.
Mayor Adams said he and Maino would “roll out something together” following their discussion, but nothing has materialized yet.
