On Remy Shand (from his 2002 biography):
Remy Shand is a songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and self-producer, and his work is both grounded and deeply grounded, yet original. He’s an artist who pushes the boundaries of R&B, pop and alternative with his own timeless fusion that’s as unmistakable as it is unconventional.
Rémy credits his musical education, in his hometown of Winnipeg, Man. to a crate of classic albums his father salvaged from a club his construction crew was remodeling. Homeschooled until 10th grade, Remy enrolled in the local high school (mainly to play in the jazz band, which teacher Remy would later hire for a recording session) but left after only a year. He had taken up acoustic guitar and bass around the age of 12, and his record collection provided him with his bearings. Right here, Honey, by Marvin Gaye a searingly honest chronicle of his divorce, has become Rémy’s favorite album and a music bible: “I consider it to be taught by the masters – the geniuses will take you all the way.” albums like Ann Peebles’ I can’t stand the rain; the Isley brothers 3+3; by Marvin Gaye I want you, by Stevie Wonder Songs in the key of life and the works of Rufus, Sly Stone, and Steely Dan, among others, all became Remy’s sources as a musician, songwriter, and producer.
